The Grand Social Media Experiment. We learn by doing.

Listening is a talent

God gave us two ears and one mouth so we should listen twice as much as speaking but I know that is not the way I operate. Really, listening takes work and is a conscious activity. When monitoring activity on a channel a person watches or observes what others are saying and responding to things. Listening is taking in data and letting it process in the brain. This takes time to be effective. It is not instantaneous to listen. I have done experiments to improve my listening skills. The easy thing to do is react. I find that when I listen and pause I do less damage, especially in a heated conversation.
I think monitoring is watching activity and seeing the different directions a topic moves to. Monitoring is passive while listening takes work. This article was informative and gave some good advice.Listening vs. Hearing: A Lesson for Marketers From a Neuroscientist.
Not everybody listens well.I can look at a person I am speaking to and it is apparent if they are engaged or not.Body language also tells a story and to pick up on this helps to be a good listener.
Monitoring will move a person along in many directions and can help you figure out how to accomplish something and get or keep people interested.Monitoring involves listening as well but keeping your mouth shut and letting the conversation move without your input.Karen B
